Which type is right for you?

AC Level 1, 120 Volt, dedicated 15 -20A circuit

Level 1 can typically deliver two to five miles of range per hour of charging. A full charge may take up to 24 hours. Level 1 is most often used in home applications but is sometimes used at businesses. For businesses, Level 1 works best in places people will park for many hours such as employee parking lots, parking garages, retail and hotels.

AC Level 2, 240 Volt, dedicated 30-40A circuit

Level 2 chargers typically deliver 10 to 60 miles of range per hour of charging. Level 2 is used in homes, workplaces and for some public charging. Studies have demonstrated that Level 2 charging systems provide slight energy efficiency benefits over Level 1 chargers (savings estimates vary based on length of charge time). Level 2 works best in places people will park for several hours such as employee or customer parking lots, parking garages, retail and hotels.

DC Fast-Charge, 480 Volt

DC Fast Charging requires specialized, high-powered charging equipment and special equipment in the vehicle itself. DC Fast-Charging can deliver an 80 percent battery charge or 60 to 100 miles of range for most EV models in about 20-30 minutes of charging. This type is best along heavy traffic corridors such as highways and interstates.

Charging Considerations

Connectivity: Many stations offer connectivity allowing remote monitoring, credit card payment processing and data collection. Connectivity is essential if you plan to charge drivers for the use of the station. However, for Level 1 and 2 stations, the monthly charges for connectivity may be greater than the money you can recoup from drivers.

Site Placement: The location of the charging port varies by vehicle. Some ports are on the front of the car, others on the side. Consider how the car will pull in and ensure the plug cord will reach all vehicle fueling ports.

Expansion: Electric vehicle adoption and technologies are evolving rapidly.

  • When developing the site, consider sizing conduit and electrical needs to accommodate future expansion (including additional stations). Consider higher capacity stations for DC Fast Charging.
  • Ensure there is enough space to expand.
  • For fast charging, look for modular EVSE systems that allow you to connect two smaller stations into one faster one.
