Electric bikes (e-bikes) are a fun, efficient way to get around town, but safety should always come first. Before you hit the road, keep these key tips in mind:
- Obey traffic laws: Just like cars, e-bikes must follow all road rules and signals.
- Inspect your bike before riding. Check brakes, tires, and do a quick scan to ensure everything is working properly.
- Wear a helmet: Protect your head—it’s the simplest way to stay safe.
- Be visible: Use lights and wear reflective gear, especially in low-light conditions.
- Ride defensively: If you’re on the sidewalk, yield to pedestrians and ride with caution.
- Use a bell or your voice to alert others when passing.
- Park responsibly: Leave enough space for everyone to access sidewalks and pathways.
Stay Safe with Your E-Bike Battery
Proper care and handling of your e-bike battery is essential for safety and performance. Follow these key tips to reduce fire risk, extend battery life, and ensure responsible disposal.
- Buy an electric bike that is certified by a qualified testing organization such as UL Solutions (formerly Underwriters Laboratories).
- Use only the manufacturer’s charger.
- Always use the manufacturer’s cord and power adapter made specifically for the bike.
- Do not leave an electric bike unattended while it’s charging, and don’t leave it charging overnight.
- Dispose of used batteries and chargers at a designated battery recycling center. Don’t just throw them in the trash.
