Cloverdale Upgrades

Project Need

Idaho Power is committed to providing reliable energy to customers in south Ada County. That’s why we’re proposing upgrades to transmission lines and substations that deliver power to the area, including parts of south Boise, south Meridian and Kuna. These lines will add capacity and reduce the chance of outages.

These projects will help Idaho Power meet the needs of current and future customers in south Ada County. They’ll improve service year-round, especially during hot summer days when energy demand peaks.

We’re upgrading the Cloverdale substation near the corner of Cloverdale and Franklin roads, and adding capacity to the existing Cloverdale transmission line, which runs along south Cloverdale Road between Franklin Road and the New York Canal.

In 2012, community leaders identified these improvements as important for the Cloverdale area in the Eastern Treasure Valley Electrical Plan. The plan forecasts electrical demand and reliability needs and addresses them through long-term planning. A community advisory committee made up of business and government leaders played a key role in drafting the plan, including concepts for the Cloverdale projects.

Cloverdale Projects

Idaho Power obtained a conditional use permit (CUP) for the Cloverdale Substation from the city of Boise in July 2018. The transmission line received CUPs from Boise in October 2018 and Ada County in December 2018. We completed Phase One in June 2019. Construction of Phase Two began in October 2020.

How will the work affect traffic?

We’ll do as much work as we can during low-traffic times to minimize traffic impacts. On occasion, we might need to close lanes temporarily.

How long will this project take?

Construction began in October and is scheduled to be completed in July 2021.

Will there be any outages because of this work?

While most of the work won’t interrupt Idaho Power’s service, some brief outages might be necessary. We’ll notify customers by mail before these planned outages occur. We’ll work hard to minimize the duration of the outages, which are most likely to occur during the middle of the day and near the project’s completion.
