Idaho Power’s Niagara Springs Fish Hatchery, south of Wendell, is closed to the public through October during construction of a roof that will cover the hatchery’s outdoor raceways. The small park between the hatchery and Niagara Springs Creek remains open.
The Niagara Springs Fish Hatchery is operated by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. Hatchery staff members raise nearly 2 million young steelhead, called smolts, each year for release into the Snake, Little Salmon and Pahsimeroi rivers.
Completion of the raceway cover is expected to take two years as construction activities are scheduled to allow for continued operation of the hatchery. The hatchery will be closed to the public again next summer and fall.
