Underground Cable Replacement Project
Idaho Power has started a 17-year project to replace existing underground cable with a more modern, reliable version.
Most cable is in subdivisions and communities where development included current technology for the time – burying the cable. Approximately seven million feet of cable have been identified for potential replacement.
The cable is 30 to 50 years old and the installation technique then was to bury cable unjacketed and directly in the ground. Installation today utilizes conduit: it’s quicker to restore outages when cable is in conduit and it better protects the cable.
The project is throughout our service area where we've already experienced reliability issues due to outdated underground cable.
Contractors To Assist
The majority of work on this project will be completed by approved Idaho Power contractors who will be clearly identified as our contractors. An Idaho Power construction manager will be on-site or available by cell phone at each job to answer residents’ questions and collect feedback.
Idaho Power will notify residents in project neighborhoods via postcards in advance of work beginning. Notification signs will also be posted at the entrance of project areas.
Normal project working hours will vary from job to job, depending on noise ordinances and daylight hours. Typical working hours will be between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
The project will involve work that may be disruptive at times, such as digging trenches, and the work may impact landscaping and other customer property like fencing. We will visit with customers prior to starting work on their property in order to find the best possible solution.
New Secter Boxes
In order to improve outage restoration, there may be additional secters in the new line. This may create permanent visual impacts through additional secter boxes, which customers are probably familiar with — they are pale green and about 4 feet by 3 feet. Learn more about secter boxes .
Prior to the beginning of work, contractors or an Idaho Power construction manager will photograph and document the job site that will be impacted including sidewalks, landscaping, driveways and roadways.
We appreciate customer understanding of any inconvenience this project may cause.
