Cooler Weather Brings Opportunities to Save Energy

After an unusually warm September and early October kept air conditioners running, cooler fall weather has finally arrived. Idaho Power encourages customers to take a few simple steps to stay comfortable, save energy and money, and help their heating systems run efficiently:

  • Replace HVAC air filters before the heating season begins. Clean filters help ensure heating systems run efficiently.
  • Inspect and clean HVAC air vents and registers. Keeping them unobstructed helps maintain efficient airflow.
  • Use sunlight for natural heat. Open curtains or blinds on south-facing windows during the day to help warm the home naturally.
  • Set the thermostat to 68°F while at home and awake. Lowering it by 7°F to 10°F while asleep or away can save up to 10% annually on heating costs. Customers with heat pumps should limit overnight setbacks to 1°F or 2°F because larger adjustments may activate backup heat, which uses more energy.
  • Check for air leaks around exterior doors and windows. If you feel a draft or see daylight, you can caulk gaps, add weatherstripping, or adjust hardware for a better fit. Sealing leaks can also help keep insects and spiders outside as the weather cools.
