Beacon Light Project

Project Need

The Treasure Valley is growing rapidly and Idaho Power is preparing to meet the needs of our existing and future customers.

The need for the Beacon Light project was identified in the Eastern Treasure Valley Electrical Plan. This collaborative process, which included key guidance from a Community Advisory Committee (CAC) created a long-term electrical infrastructure plan to address the eastern Treasure Valley’s electrical demand.

With the support of the CAC, Idaho Power has pursued activities to implement the Plan, including the new substation and associated transmission line necessary to serve growing electrical needs in Eagle and surrounding areas.

Beacon Light Substation

The site for the Beacon Light Substation, at the southeast corner of Beacon Light Road, was selected in 2002; the substation construction was permitted by the City of Eagle in 2006. The substation will receive electricity from the proposed 138-kilovolt (kV) transmission line. The substation will then provide service to our customers via lower voltage distribution lines. Beacon Light Transmission Line

The proposed 138-kV transmission line will connect from an existing transmission line along State Street to the Beacon Light Substation. View the project map with route options .

The majority of the transmission line will be on wood poles, approximately 75 to 85 feet, and typically 300 feet apart. The transmission line will be built in existing easements, road rights-of-way, or new easements (to be purchased after permitting approval).

Idaho Power received a Conditional Use Permit from the City of Eagle in August 2017, applying for a route along Idaho highway 16 and Beacon Light Road. Idaho Power is requesting approval of a Master Site Plan with Ada County in 2017. When fully permitted, Idaho Power will finalize design and begin construction in 2019. This will allow Beacon Light substation to provide electrical service in 2020.
