April 28, 2008Swan Falls Historic Exhibit Open May 17Idaho Power archeologists will be on hand Saturday, May 17, at the company’s Swan Falls Historic Exhibit to discuss the history of the first Snake River hydroelectric dam. “Swan Falls Dam is unique in that it was the first on the Snake River to produce electricity,” said Idaho Power Senior Archeologist Shane Baker. “The dam and the area south of Kuna share a rich history. We want people to see and experience it.” According to Baker, the historic exhibit will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., and is free to the public. The informal program allows visitors to take self-guided tours of the historic powerhouse. Company representatives will answer questions about the project. “This is part of a month-long, statewide effort by the State Historic Preservation Office to promote Idaho’s history,” Baker said. “There are other activities taking place around the state in May.” Normally the historic exhibit is closed to the general public due to heightened security precautions. Tours are available by appointment. The recreational area adjacent to the dam offers restrooms and day-use facilities for picnics, fishing and boat launching. The Swan Falls Dam was built in 1901 to serve nearby mining operations at Murphy and Silver City. It is 25 miles south of Kuna.
