Ward Substation Project

According to U.S. Census figures, Canyon County was one of the fastest growing areas in the nation. In order to serve the growing electrical needs of this area, Idaho Power is currently projecting that a new electrical distribution substation will be required in the area of 11th Avenue North and U.S. 20/26 by the year 2014, or earlier if the growth rate increases faster than anticipated.

The proposed substation would be served by a new 138,000-volt (138-kV) sub-transmission line to be constructed from the existing transmission line along U.S. 20/26.

Ward Substation Details

The proposed Ward Substation site is located approximately 1/4-mile north of U.S. 20/26 on the east side of 11th Avenue North. The 1.5-acre substation site is approximately 300 by 200 feet. The station will be gravel surfaced and enclosed by a seven-foot-tall slatted chain link fence. Landscaping will be installed around the station perimeter.

Upon obtaining a Conditional Use Permit from Canyon County, Idaho Power will erect a sign indicating that the property is a permitted electrical substation site with an anticipated construction date in 2014.

Sub-Transmission Line Details

The 138-kV sub-transmission line serving the new Ward Substation will use single poles averaging 80 feet in height with spans averaging 300 feet. The 1/4-mile long line will be constructed north along the west side of 11th Avenue North and then transition east across the road as the line approaches the station. The construction date of this line will coincide with the need date for the substation, currently planned for the year 2014.
