Sage Substation Project
Project Need
Growth in the Ontario, Ore., area has resulted in increased electrical demand on the Nyssa-Vale-Ontario power transmission system serving the area. This reduces the options available to deal with maintenance and repair issues on the system.
In order to continue to provide reliable electric service to Ontario, Nyssa, and Vale area customers and to meet existing and future electrical capacity needs, Idaho Power plans to build a new transmission line in 2008 from the Ontario Substation and tie in to the line between Nyssa and Vale at a place that will be called Ontario Junction. The 16-mile powerline will be built to 138,000-volt standards, but will be energized at 69,000 volts.
As electrical loads in the area grow, the Ontario Junction site will be developed into a substation called Sage Substation. The location of the junction/station has been selected to provide the greatest reliability at the lowest cost to customers in the Ontario, Nyssa, and Vale area.
Conditional Use
A Conditional Use permit has been obtained for this new junction point/station.
Station Details
The proposed Ontario Junction/Sage Station site is located about halfway between Nyssa and Vale, Ore. The substation site will be approximately two acres. The station’s purpose is to provide alternate means of supplying power and increased voltage support to the Ontario, Nyssa, and Vale substations.

Project Schedule
This station will be developed in four stages.
Stage 1 (2010)
Purchase about two acres of land and build a new transmission line to the point where the new 69,000-kilovolt (kV) line from Ontario Substation connects to the existing Nyssa-Vale 69-kV line. The line will be built to 138-kV standards but will be initially energized at 69-kV. Add three air break switches and controls to provide automatic sectionalizing of the three terminal 69-kV lines.
Stage 2 (2012)
Fence and prep the site. Add a permanent 69-kV shunt capacitor bank. The bank will be permanently on so only manual switches will be needed in the initial installation. Up to this point the site will be called Ontario Junction.
Stage 3 (2015 – 2020)
Convert new line segment between Ontario Substation and Ontario Junction to 138-kV and convert the Ontario Junction site to the Sage transmission station, to include one 138/69-kV transformer, one 138-kV and two 69-kV circuit breakers.
Stage 4 (2025)
Add second 138/69-kV transformer.
