Our Energy Future
Responsible Planning
As the largest electric utility in southern Idaho, we lead and collaborate with others to provide innovative solutions to ensure a reliable, responsible energy future.
Idaho Power plans for the future in a number of ways:
The IRP Process
Our Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) is our 20-year roadmap to meet anticipated electricity requirements.
Our most recent IRP was developed in 2009 and projects the following in the next 20 years:
- Growth of 10,000 customers per year through 2029
- The demand for electricity during peak-load hours is expected to increase by 53 megawatts (MW) per year (enough electricity to power 31,800 average homes)
- The amount of energy needed to serve our customers is expected to grow on average by 13 MW per year
During this process the IRP Advisory Council meets regularly to develop a workable plan for all stakeholders. Council members include:
- Members from our environmental community
- Major industrial customers
- Irrigation representatives
- State legislators
- Public utility commission representatives
- Other interested parties.
Public meetings begin in August 2011 for the next IRP.
Regional Electric Plans
Our regional planning process is driven by people who live and work in our communities.
Working together, we determine appropriate locations for transmission and distribution lines throughout our service area.
Find out what it's like to participate in the regional planning process from the perspective of Jim Johnston, a member of the Eastern Idaho Electrical Plan community advisory committee. Jim's Story.
Collaborative Planning Activities
Ultimately, these collaborative efforts lead to the strongest solutions.
