Project Status
Project Description
Malad Hydroelectric Project (FERC No. 2726 ) is composed of two diversions creating two power flume canals that generate a combined 21.7 MW. Both the upper and lower generating units are supplied primarily by springs which originate within the 1.7-mile river reach.
Application Timeline
Idaho Power applied for a new license for the Malad Project in July 2002. On March 24, 2005, the FERC granted Idaho Power a new 30-year license, which included Protection, Mitigation and Enhancement (PM&E) measures in the form of license articles which will be conducted by the company over the term of the new license.
Protection, Mitigation and Enhancement (PM&E) Measures
Improvements to be made include recreational use enhancements, water quality/minimum flow increases and ESA snail habitat monitoring measures. The lower diversion has been retrofitted with a fish ladder to allow upstream and downstream passage of resident fish species.
The lower diversion fish ladder was completed in January of 2008, and testing completed in March. Initial reports show high use by resident trout species as well as other species of fish. Idaho Power will initiate planning for the upper diversion ladder in 2015.
